What's the right ensemble size for the room and moment?
Ensemble size follows the moment, not the guest count alone: a drinks reception or ceremony suits 12–15 players, a seated dinner or cocktail hour fits 15–21, a dance-floor show needs at least 25, and a full gala centrepiece calls for 45 to 65 musicians filling the stage.
- Arrival / reception / ceremony — 12–15 musicians. A string-led set that plays quietly under conversation, then holds the room's attention when it needs to.
- Seated dinner / cocktail hour — 15–21 musicians. Enough colour and presence to be the evening's centrepiece without competing with conversation at the tables.
- Dance floor — 25 musicians minimum. Below this, the string section stops sounding like a section and starts sounding like solo players — the exact problem a smaller lineup runs into.
- Full-orchestra gala centrepiece — 45–65 musicians. The moment the whole room stops talking and watches the stage.
The stage rule nobody tells you until it's too late
As a rough guide, a full string and horn section needs about 1 to 1.5 square metres per musician on stage, depending on the instrument — a cellist or timpanist needs more room than a violinist. Our own technical rider for Symphonic Disco calls for a stage at least 10m wide by 5m deep, ideally 14m by 10m, once you add the full sound and lighting rig for 25 players.
We learned this the hard way at a public concert in front of Manor in Lugano: the stage was only 7 by 4 metres for a 25-piece Symphonic Disco lineup. We made it work, but only by cutting six musicians on the spot. It's possible — it's just not what we recommend, because the sound quality of a string section depends directly on how many players are actually in it. A smaller stage doesn't just mean a smaller show; it means a genuinely different sound.
There's no single formula beyond that, honestly. We've played with 9 musicians in a hall built for 1,000 people, and with 25 in a room for just 30 guests. It depends entirely on what you want and what your venue can physically hold — which is exactly why we talk it through with you before quoting anything.
Which show fits which mood?

The refined welcome: Exotic Event (15 musicians, 40 minutes)
Ravel's Tzigane, Tchaikovsky's Andante Cantabile, Piazzolla's Cuatro Estaciones Porteñas — a genuinely elegant classical set for 15 players. We think of it as a musical moment, a short concert rather than a background layer, that works best right before the apéritif or dinner begins, not underneath it. The gala dinner: Frank Sinatra & Friends (21 musicians, 80 minutes)
This one is built for a proper seated gala dinner: guests at round tables in a big hall, and once dessert clears, the 21-piece band takes over with swing and big-band standards. It has more presence than Exotic Event's string-led sound — horns, rhythm section, a full jazz-orchestra colour — but it's still built to let a room keep talking between numbers, not just watch a stage.
The flagship dance floor: Symphonic Disco (25 musicians, 90 minutes)
This is the show we lead with, because it's the one that gets a whole room moving. It's already booked for corporate galas and private events across Switzerland, including for clients such as Novartis, Raiffeisen, Interroll, Banca del Sempione and Credinvest Bank. Ninety minutes of disco, pop and Latin classics reimagined for a full orchestra — not a playlist with strings added on top, but new arrangements written from the ground up.
The full-orchestra centrepiece: The Grand Romance Gala & Home Alone in Symphony
When the brief calls for the whole orchestra as the evening's main event — a milestone anniversary, a large public-facing gala — two 2026-season shows scale all the way up: The Grand Romance Gala, built around Tchaikovsky's ballets and beloved opera arias, fields 65 musicians; Home Alone in Symphony & Hollywood Christmas fields 60 for a festive, film-score centrepiece. Both need a genuinely large stage — see the space rule above before you commit to one.
What about something fully custom?
One line in our catalogue causes confusion: YOUR PLAYLIST, our fully open-repertoire format, is really built for our own public shows and for promoters — it isn't a standard corporate-hire product on its own. But full customisation genuinely is available for a private or corporate booking: we can build a set around your favourite songs or a company theme on almost any of our formats. It just costs more and needs more lead time, because it means writing a new arrangement and adding rehearsal, not simply picking different tracks off a shelf.
