THE GRAND ROMANCE GALA

Tchaikovsky's Greatest Ballets & Beloved Opera Arias

The night your favourite melodies come alive

You already know this music. You've heard it in films, at weddings, on the radio your whole life. The soaring Nessun Dorma. The tender O Mio Babbino Caro. The shimmer of the Nutcracker. The unstoppable cannons of the 1812 Overture. Time to Say Goodbye.

But there is a world of difference between hearing a recording — and feeling 40 musicians fill a hall around you, the strings rising, the brass blooming, the final chord hanging in the air before the applause breaks.

In one evening, The Grand Romance Gala brings together the most romantic music Tchaikovsky ever wrote and the opera arias the whole world has fallen in love with — performed live by one of Europe's most talked-about young orchestras.

The Programme

  • Dance of the Tumblers (The Snow Maiden)
  • Waltz of the Flowers (The Nutcracker)
  • Theme from Piano Concerto No. 1
  • Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy (The Nutcracker)
  • Garland Waltz (The Sleeping Beauty)

  • Habanera (Carmen)

The arias you know from the great voices of Pavarotti, Bocelli, Te Kanawa and Netrebko — performed live in lavish symphonic arrangements by the vocal soloists of the United Soloists Orchestra.

About the Orchestra

Described by the press as "the ensemble that revolutionizes music in Europe" (Ticino Welcome), the United Soloists Orchestra is a Swiss symphonic ensemble founded in 2017. It unites young virtuoso soloists drawn from Europe's most prestigious institutions — among them the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich, Teatro alla Scala and the Royal Concertgebouw.

The orchestra's own vocal soloists take centre stage in the second half of the evening, bringing the world's most beloved arias to life alongside their colleagues.

Their performances have been called an "explosion of life" (laRegione) — combining the highest technical level with a warm, generous, deeply expressive sound. As the media wrote: "It is not just music: it is magic!" (Ticino Welcome)

Under the musical direction of Arseniy Shkaptsov, the orchestra has one simple belief: that no one should ever feel that this music is "not for them." Tonight, it's for you.

The Soloists

Olga Czerwinski

Olga Czerwinski · Soprano

The Austrian soprano of Russian origin feels equally at home in the Vienna Musikverein and on Asia's great stages. Following her debut as Zerlina in Mozart's Don Giovanni, guest engagements took her to the Teatro Ristori in Verona, the Bühne Baden, the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing, the Guangzhou Opera House and the Shanghai Grand Theatre. She is a regular soloist at Vienna's storied Hofburg balls — the very world from which this evening's operetta melodies are drawn. With over 1,500 concerts to her name and First Prize at the Alpe-Adria Competition in Udine, she is one of the most expressive voices of her generation. Her debut album, featuring Sergei Rachmaninoff's romance cycles, is released next year.

Francesco Tuppo

Francesco Tuppo · Tenor

The Italian tenor is one of the most sought-after Rossini interpreters of his generation. As Don Ramiro in La Cenerentola he has appeared at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples, the Teatro Regio in Parma and the Teatro Argentina in Rome, and as Count Almaviva at the Teatro Massimo in Palermo and the Novosibirsk Opera House under the baton of Dmitri Jurowski. At the Teatro Comunale Luciano Pavarotti in Modena he sang a concert in honour of the great tenor. He is equally at home in operetta: The Merry Widow, The Csárdás Princess, The Beautiful Helen — performed at houses such as the Teatro Donizetti in Bergamo and the Teatro Coccia in Novara.

(Translated by Google) The musicians were truly excellent and in tune with each other; it's a shame that sometimes the background music (speakers) was too loud and drowned out the instruments. (Original) Musicisti davvero molto bravi, in sintonia tra loro; peccato a volte la musica di sottofondo (casse acustiche) era troppo alta e copriva gli strumenti.
