Biography
Gil Shalev, clarinet at USO, is based in Lugano and was awarded a Swiss Government Excellence Scholarship.
She began studying clarinet at the age of 10 with Mrs. Nurit Blum, and continued with Mr. Yevgeny Yehudin, Principal Clarinetist of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra. With him, she completed her Bachelor’s degree in Music Performance at the Buchmann-Mehta School of Music, and her Master’s degree in Music Performance at the Conservatorio della Svizzera Italiana in the class of Professor François Benda. She is now perusing studies for Masters in Specialized Music Performance in the same class.
Her competition and prize record includes second and third prizes in the BMSM Annual Wind Competitions (2021 and 2023), as well as a special prize at the Sava Dimitrov International Clarinet Competition (2025). As part of Trio Nigun, she won 1st prize at the Rospigliosi International Chamber Music Competition.
Across performances, she has appeared with orchestras including the Young Israeli Philharmonic Orchestra, the Israel Chamber Orchestra, the Beer Sheva Symphony Orchestra and the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, and has played under conductors such as Lahav Shani, Zubin Mehta, Vasily Petrenko and Sir András Schiff—bringing a refined, solo-forward voice to USO’s crossover programming.
